thumb

Overview

With the move toward minimally invasive cosmetic dental treatments and the ever-expanding variety of tooth whitening products on the market today, internal, and external bleaching options are now able to afford the clinician with a predictable, safe, and effective means to lighten and brighten a patient’s natural dentition. Many of these products, especially 10% carbamide peroxide gel, have additional revenue-generating potential as a value-added treatment for patients undergoing aligner therapy and as an oral hygiene adjunct which may greatly assist patients not necessarily interested in aesthetic enhancement. This presentation will outline the most up-to-date tooth bleaching materials, procedures, and protocols, dispel the myths, and reveal many low-cost and out of the box marketing strategies that exist for the contemporary dental practice.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the most common etiological causes of tooth discoloration and the treatment options available to patients for treatment with these conditions.
  • Review the factors which contribute to the efficacy and predictability of the various tooth whitening protocols in the treatment of discolored natural dentition.
  • Investigate many of the widely held dogmas and myths surrounding current tooth bleaching techniques and clinical recommendations.
  • Establish evidence-based protocols utilizing various materials and methods for in-office and take-home tooth bleaching strategies to improve successful aesthetic/hygienic dental outcomes for existing patient base.
  • Apply new theoretical information to a concise, hands-on, training exercise to help ensure improved patient outcomes and treatment success.

Dr. Miles Reed Cone

DMD, MS, CDT, FAC

Dr. Miles Reed Cone is a graduate of Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, and completed a three-year Prosthodontic residency program while serving in the United States Army before being honorably discharged as a field grade officer in the rank of Major. Miles' current role in civilian life revolves around his position as a clinician and founder of Nuance.

Miles is one of only three prosthodontists in the state to have achieved board certification and diplomate status within his specialty. Also of note, Miles is one of only two prosthodontists in the entirety of New England to have obtained additional qualifications as a Certified Dental Technician. These rare aptitudes lay the framework for many of the techniques and research that Miles publishes in various peer-reviewed academic journals, and have also created a unique opportunity for Miles to serve as a Key Opinion speaker and thought leader for some of the most prestigious dental companies in the world, including GC American, Amann Girrbach, Smile Line USA, and Straumann Implants.

As an active member of the local dental community in Portland, Miles continuously provides pro-bono treatment for Maine residents in need and takes time out from his private practice at Nuance to teach prosthodontics several days a week at the University of New England College of Dental Medicine. At the state level, Miles holds a seat on the Maine Dental Association’s Council for Government Relations, and is a frequently invited to present his work at study clubs and dental meetings. Nationally, Miles partakes as a guest speaker at several of the top academic institutions, with recent venues including Harvard, Iowa, Stony Brook, San Francisco, Buffalo, and Maryland. Additionally, Miles serves as a moderator and lecturer at numerous dental conferences including the American Dental Association (Washington, DC), the American College of Prosthodontists (San Diego, CA), the American Prosthodontic Society (Chicago, IL), and the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (Las Vegas).
