Option 1:

Skin Cancer Stream

  • 1:30pm - 1:35pm: Welcome - A/Prof Tony Dicker
  •  1:35pm - 2:20pm: Surgery options for melanoma diagnosis and treatment - Prof Andrew Barbour
  •  2:20pm - 3:00pm: Using Radiotherapy for Your Skin Cancer Patients - Dr. Bradley Wong
    • Australia continues to have the unenviable status as the skin cancer capital of the world. Radiation therapy can be an especially good option for lesions in areas where surgery would result in significant cosmetic imperfections, for patients unsuitable for surgery, or in the adjuvant setting for high-risk lesions. GPs are integral to the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer and the longitudinal management of patients with widespread disease. This presentation covers key advances in radiation therapy and its application to skin cancer and treatment guidelines; radiation therapy skin reactions, patient management, and FAQs; and interactive case study analyses.
  • 3:00pm - 3:30pm: Afternoon Tea
  • 3:30pm - 4:15pm: Systemic Therapy for Melanoma - Prof Victoria Atkinson - Prof Michael Henderson
    • Get an update in systemic therapy for neoadjuvant / adjuvant and advanced melanoma. Therapy for melanoma is a rapidly changing field and, as such, it is important to be updated in new advancements in systemic therapies.
  • 4:15pm - 5:00pm: Treatment Options for Advanced Keratinocyte Cancers
    • This session will cover the management of advanced cutaneous malignancy with a focus on developments in management of these patients, highlighting new and evolving treatment strategies. Indications, results and toxicity of treatment will also be discussed.

Option 2:

General Dermatology Stream

  • 1:30pm - 1:35pm: Welcome - Dr Dianne King
  • 1:35pm - 2:20pm: The Gut-Skin Connection in Skin Cancer and Nutritional Tools for Prevention - Dr Agnieszka Warchalowski
    • The link between the gut microbiome and human health has potentially been the most significant discovery in the last 20 years. The link between diet and gut-skin axis has now also been well-defined in the scientific literature and the focus has shifted to identifying how modulatory compounds found in food can alter disease progression. Understanding the link between diet and health presents an opportunity for improving outcomes in patients using simple nutritional strategies rapidly becoming an essential adjunct treatment in any clinical setting. This talk will cover communication pathways between the gut microbiome, immune system, and the skin; microbial and environmental regulation of the epigenome; the impact of immunoscence and inflammaging on disease progression; the gut-skin axis in the development of dermatological conditions, with a focus on skin cancers; research into how the gut microbiome improves immunotherapy efficacy; and dietary interventions and nutrients that support a healthy gut microbiome, epigenome and immune function. Gain an understanding of the factors and pathophysiological processes that contribute to the development of skin cancer, learn about the potential of immune modulation and epigenetic regulation in skin cancer prevention and management, and obtain a simple nutritional framework to improve outcomes in patients with dermatological conditions and skin cancer.
  • 2:20pm - 3:00pm: Pigmentary disorders
  • 3:00pm - 3:30pm: Afternoon Tea
  • 3:30pm - 4:15pm: Microbiome and eczema - Dr Kate DeAmbrosis
  • 4:15pm - 5:00pm - Laser use in the treatment of actinic keratosis – an underutilised treatment option - Dr Jenny Kimmins

Sunday, 21 July 2024

  • 8:55am - 9:00am: Welcome - Helmut Schaider
  • 9:00am - 9:45am: ACEMID, imaging, artificial intelligence, and the future of skin cancer - Prof Peter Soyer
  • 9:45am - 10:30am: Practical and Pragmatic Management of Severely Sun-Damaged Skin - A/Prof Jim Muir
    • Older patients with severely sun damaged skin have a propensity to develop both melanomas and keratinocyte malignancies at a very fast clip. Their background skin is replete with solar keratosis. Best regarded as a chronic disease, these patients need to be managed in a way that addresses the four C's of skin cancer i.e. cure, convenience, cost and cosmesis. They need a multimodal and often a multidisciplinary approach. While many approaches are available, it is important to not make the treatment worse than the disease. Modalities such as Mohs surgery and radiation need to be employed carefully and selectively. A/Prof Muir's talk will illustrate his approach to this common presentation.
  • 10:30am - 11:00am: Morning Tea
  • 11:00am - 11:45am: How to (and how not to) biopsy suspected melanoma: A debate - Prof Cliff Rosendahl & A/Prof Jim Muir
    • Excisional Biopsies
        • The management of melanoma involves several links in a chain of critical actions. The clinician has a choice of biopsy options which should be selected according to benefits for the patient – not the doctor. In this talk, doctors will be empowered to know why the default choice should be excisional biopsy, as well as when and why alternatives are appropriate. The topic is fascinating as a source of controversy, but from the viewpoint of patient safety, the resolution is a no-brainer!
    • vs Shave Biopsies
        • Shave procedures are a widely used, effective and safe diagnostic and therapeutic technique in the management of skin disease. Although routinely used in melanoma management by specialist dermatologists, uptake by GPs has been needlessly limited. Discussion of the topic is often clouded by misinformation, misunderstanding and no small degree of emotion. This talk will address (and dispel) the many myths surrounding shave procedures. Importantly, the pitfalls and when not to shave will be explored. The relevant literature and case studies drawn from A/Prof Muir's own practice will be used to illustrate the utility of this simple procedure.
  • 11:45am - 12:30pm: Photographic technology in skin cancer practice: Is it worth the effort? - Prof Cliff Rosendahl
    • This session will cover the efficacy and necessity of photographic technologies in a skin cancer clinic. Based on an evaluation of 17 years in a practice, the discussion will evaluate prospective data, including diagnostic and survival metrics.
