Overview

Abstract

Today, more than ever, there is a bigger demand on the practitioner to have esthetic alternatives to treating little ones. Stainless steel crown restorations have been the gold standard in Pediatric dentistry ever since their invention. However, more and more parents are demanding “white” tooth restorations for their child’s smile! Restoring severely decayed primary teeth still pose so many challenges for the clinician; from choosing the right treatment option to dealing with treatment failures when they happen. This lecture, is going to answer the million-dollar question of how to offer white crowns to children in the dental practice drama free and tear-free?

Introduction

Pediatric Dentistry is challenging in every possible way to us as clinicians. Starting from choosing the proper treatment plan specific for the child to executing it and the patient leaving the practice happy with a smile- this journey is prone to a lot of surprises. Stainless steel crowns are not the only golden standard restorations to extensively decayed primary teeth. After the introduction of prefabricated zirconia white crowns for baby teeth, we as dentists have one more tool in our toolbox.

This lecture aims to take the dentist through the journey of taking great care of a child patient starting from proper case selection for the use of zirconia crowns in primary teeth whether anterior or posterior, indications vs contraindications to their use, to behaviour management, pain management, nitrous oxide sedation and discussion of common causes for failure of zirconia crowns. Dentists can achieve healthy and happy outcomes for their pediatric patients, giving both them and their parents not only what they desire, but also what they need- a healthy long-lasting beautiful pearly white smile!

Dr Yasmin Kottait

DDS, HDD, MFDS Ed, Dip Hypno, MSc, IBCCES Autism

A pediatric dentist by morning and an award-winning tooth fairy by night, her mission is: spreading smiles and healthy habits to children. Yasmin’s career has been dedicated to dentistry to little ones, and backing her up is a master’s degree in Pediatric Dentistry and three dental diplomas. Her two latest achievements were through a cognitive based hypnotherapy diploma from the UK to add a much-needed psychological depth to her treatments and an extra certification in dealing with children with autism. After becoming a unicorn in the dental world through her new “hypnodontism”; children and parents alike soon realize she is no normal tooth fairy; she also has magic kid whispering powers.

If she is not spending her day treating children, she is globetrotting and attending conferences always advocating the best for children causes. Devoted to an international charity foundation serving less fortunate children in developing countries, her oral hygiene awareness campaigns and children plays (the infamous sad tooth vs happy tooth) make such an incredible difference! Her enthusiasm is infectious when she is explaining about the inner works of children’s dentistry at local and global conferences or even at “Mommy Coffee Mornings”. She also dedicates a portion of her time examining other dentists for the Royal College of Surgeons, UK. Yasmin give’s children a voice, and become their advocate. Yet despite this, a lot of fights are yet to be won. She now has a regular segment on a popular channel, which is dedicated for children. This is just the beginning as; much public awareness is still needed to help parents make better decisions for a healthier future generation.
