History of Speech Pathology

Speech Pathology roots its history back to the 18th century originated in England. In the United State, speech pathology continued to be emphasized, but Samuels Potter’s book on various types of speech and language disorders shifted a focus on that area. Speech Pathology continued to be the focus in the field, however, and the American Academy of Speech Correction was established in 1926.

During WWII, many soldiers returned with brain injury and this increased the demand and curiosity of speech pathology amongst researchers and practitioners. Brain studies, technological advances and the development of standardised procedures gave rise to more useful receptive and treatment techniques. The field of speech pathology became well aware and practised by many researchers and practitioners.

During the ’60s to ’80s, there have been many advancements in linguistic studies which further enhanced the speech-language pathologist’s understanding and ability to treat a variety of language disorders to people.

In the 21st century, speech pathology has begun to research and treat the pragmatic use of language along with other areas of communication disorders, which have been addressed as the profession continues to develop worldwide.
