Although psychedelic substances have been used in Indigenous spiritual and healing traditions for centuries, the most significant driver of our contemporaneous interest in psychedelics is their potential therapeutic value in psychiatry.

But changing public attitudes and evolving legal frameworks have reignited broader debates regarding the role of psychedelics in society. The future of psychedelics will likely be shaped by scientific evidence, ethical considerations, healthcare policy, and cultural attitudes. While psychedelics offer considerable therapeutic potential, their integration into society presents significant opportunities as well as substantial challenges.

Some scholars argue that psychedelics could contribute to broader social benefits by enhancing empathy, environmental awareness, and prosocial attitudes. Studies have reported associations between psychedelic experiences and increased feelings of connectedness to nature, reduced authoritarian attitudes, and greater openness to experience. While such findings remain subject to debate, they raise intriguing questions regarding the potential societal impact of widespread psychedelic use.

At the same time, growing commercialization presents significant concerns. The emergence of a rapidly expanding psychedelic industry has attracted substantial investment from pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology firms, and private investors. Critics argue that commercialization risks prioritizing profit over patient welfare and may lead to the medicalization of experiences that have historically held cultural, spiritual, and communal significance.

The future possibilities for psychedelic use pose intriguing and challenging areas of debate and discussion.

I hope you can join me.

FRANZCP

Dr Nigel Strauss FRANZCP (nigelstrauss.com.au) is a psychiatrist best known for his longstanding interest in Psychedelic Medicines and their safe introduction into Clinical Psychiatric Practice in Australia. He is currently a Consultant Psychiatrist at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne and an Adjunct Clinical Associate within the School of Health Sciences Swinburne University.

Dr Strauss served on the Royal Australian College of Psychiatrists Steering Committee advising on Psychedelic Assisted Psychotherapy and its safe introduction into Clinical Practice in Australia. He has appeared in several educational podcasts about Psychedelics and has given a number of public presentations about Psychedelic Medicines.

“As the research into the effectiveness of psychedelic drugs in the treatment of psychiatric illnesses continues in Australia and around the world, I believe it is time to look beyond this indication for psychedelic research and aim for broader horizons.

I believe the time has come to investigate psychedelic substances not only as medical treatments but as substances that might be used for the betterment of well people and the societies in which we live, or indeed as substances that help provide meaning to human experience.”
