The overall aim of Level 1 is to assess whether you have clients who are overcontrolled and may benefit from RO DBT. After completing Level 1, clinicians can choose to continue Level 2 of the RO DBT Practitioner Pathway or the Skills Instructor Pathway. For more information about the different pathways, click here.

Learning Objectives. At the end of this course you will be able to:

  2. Evaluate the efficacy of RO DBT for clients with an overcontrolled style of coping via published peer reviewed studies.
  3. Compare the differences between overcontrolled and undercontrolled bio-temperament and explain how these impact perception and emotion regulation strategies in social situations.
  4. Integrate the three components of the bio-social theory for disorders of overcontrol into your case formulization of clients.
  5. Use the biosocial theory script to teach the bio-social theory for disorders of overcontrol to your clients early on in treatment.
  6. Integrate the neuroregulatory model with the bio-social theory for overcontrolled disorders and teach the neuroregulatory model to your overcontrolled clients.
  7. Apply the Big Three +1 Skill to activate social safety within yourself and teach this skill to your clients whenever tension is present.
  8. Identify common errors and assumptions when assessing overcontrol and apply this knowledge to your own assessment procedures.
  9. Use the Assessing Styles of Coping Word-Pair List to assess your own and your clients’ coping style.

How it works:

The course consists of two days of live training, 4.5 hours teaching plus 30 minutes break time each day, totalling 9 hours of active teaching.

The trainer will teach the exact same materials as our on-demand Level 1 training, with the added benefit that you can ask questions during the live training sessions.

After each training day you are asked to complete an online quiz about the materials taught during that day. You must answer 80% of all questions correctly in order to pass the quiz.

To be eligible for a certificate of completion listing 9 CE credits, you must

  • attend both training days (July 2 and 9, 2026) live, from start to finish;
  • pass both quizzes by answering at least 80% of the questions correctly; and
  • complete the online CE evaluation form after the second day of training.

You must meet all of these conditions. No partial credit will be awarded.

For more details, visit our training page here.
