As a dental practitioner, Dr. Anikó suffered chronic pain for over thirty years. She would frequently experience pain and discomfort in her shoulders, neck, and back. Any relief she was able to find was short-termed. At work, she would already be experiencing burning pain at 10 on a Monday morning, after treating only the second patient. It seemed that her options were limited. Not only was she forced to think about early retirement, she had to also consider whether to depend on long-term anti-inflammatory medicine or undergo risky surgery.
Dr. Anikó was not alone. Most dental schools don’t offer sufficient training on how to bend over patients without compromising the neck, back and shoulders. As a result, 87% of dentists and up to 96% of dental hygienists suffer chronic pain due to their working posture.
That is why the Inner Ergonomic Principles of the Alexander Technique come in as true lifesavers. Upon learning about the concept, Dr. Anikó didn’t take long to figure out that her harmful posture habits were going against the biomechanical design of the human body, which was causing the pain and suffering. By applying the Inner Ergonomic Principles in her daily activities and especially her working posture, Dr. Anikó got her life back, and retirement is the furthest thing on her mind.
She did not stop there. Knowing how much chronic pain is impacting the life of many other dental practitioners, Dr. Anikó obtained an Advanced Diploma of the Alexander Studies to become a Certified Alexander Teacher. This enabled her to found Optimum Dental Posture to train her colleagues and their teams in reducing occupational chronic pain and stress.
Dr. Anikó is a member of the Australian Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique. She has been a presenter at multiple ADA Congresses, Conferences, CPD courses and group meetings, and has been involved in a research project conducted at Melbourne University Dental School on oral health students’ wellbeing, where she contributed in showing the benefits of "Fundamental Inner Ergonomics" training.
