Overview

The mouth plays a central role in multiple aspects of human development; even after childhood we as adults unconsciously use our mouth to focus, self-regulate or even guide our finely tuned motor actions.

During this 2-day course we will focus on the mouth’s many functions to understand the oral behaviour we see in many of the children we work with.

This course is designed for speech and language therapists. No previous knowledge or training is required.


Course Outline

Day 1:

  • 09:00 – 10:45 Welcome and introduction, workshop objectives; Introduction to the mouth and its general role in the development
  • 10:45 – 11:00 Short break
  • 11:00 – 12:00 The mouth’s role in relation to feeding
  • 12:00 – 13:00 Lunch break
  • 13:00 – 14:30 The mouth’s role in relation to regulation and attention
  • 14:30 – 14:45 Short break
  • 14:45 – 16:00 The mouth’s role in relation to discovering the world, building concepts and communication


Day 2:

  • 09:00 – 10:45 Constraints: individual, task and environment
  • 10:45 – 11:00 Short break
  • 11:00 – 12:00 Treatment principles for the mouth
  • 12:00 – 13:00 Lunchbreak
  • 13:00 – 14:30 Analysing tools and materials for their use in the treatment of oral functions
  • 14:30 – 14:45 Short break
  • 14:45 – 16:00 Case study; Discussion and evaluation; Certificates


Course Objectives

After the course, the participant should be able to:

  • Describe the relationship between sensory systems and motor in regard to oral functioning for speech, feeding, regulation, attention, posture and general motor development.
  • Describe the development of mouthing and its role in the development of feeding, speech and language.
  • Recognise sensory processing disorders as a possible component in children with oral deficits and/or oral habits.
  • Describe compensation and adaptation techniques for or through oral functions.
  • Make critical decisions regarding the choice for tools in the treatment of oral functions.

  1. Please note that registration will be on a first-come-first-served basis and course fees must be paid prior to closing date to reserve a place. 
  2. Payment of fees is not a guarantee for the event to be staged as planned. Should the event be cancelled for any reason, a full refund will be made to all registered participants and no other claims are allowed. The organiser disclaims responsibility should any change in the event occur for any reason. 
  3. Participants to the course are not allowed to split registration for different persons. 
  4. For 1 full day seminar, only one set of meal entitlement per day shall be given to the registered participants. For half day seminar, only coffee and tea will be provided. 
  5. Food served will be “no pork and no lard”.
  6. No refund of fees for participant cancellations including medical leave but substitutions are allowed with written request to organizer at least two working days before the course commences. 
  7. Registration will be taken as confirmed upon receipt of payment or issuance of invoice. Any cancellation will not be allowed. However, substitutions are allowed with written request to organizer at least two working days before the course commences. Please note that registration will be on a first-come-first-served basis. Payment must be received by due date, before attendance of training.

Karin Brinkmann

After having worked in her private practice since the late 90s for 25 years, Karin Brinkmann has since focused on mentoring SLP's, OT's and PT's, teachers and (professional) caregivers in 2016. Her main specialty is children with speech (motor) and language disorders, sensory processing disorders, and/or neurological disorders.

Karin: "I want (speech therapists) to be able to understand what the role of Sensory Processing is in developing speech, language, and feeding skills…it can make treatment easier and more effective as I stress the importance of working in a functional way. By recognising the children's (unique) way of processing information, it is possible to see it as a strength and not as a problem."

Karin has also been a PROMPT instructor since 2008, and travels the world to teach both PROMPT and Sensory Processing in English, Dutch and German.
