Nursing Practioners are required to undergo Continue Professional Development throughout their careers to develop the personal and professional qualities required in the exercise of their profession. The following article has been extracted by APNA, that informs the different CPD requirements for nursing practice.

The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia regulated the practice of nursing having national jurisdiction since 2010. One of its key roles is to protect the public by making sure that only nurses who are suitably qualified to practice in a competent and ethical manner are registered.

Continuing education is now recognised as an essential component of registration by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. As addressed, the type of learning activities selected can be broad and varied. Registrants are encouraged to opt for a combination of face-to face, simulation, interactive e-learning and self-directed learning. Some examples of CPD include:

• Postgraduate studies

• Participating in journal clubs

• In-service education

• Attending conferences, workshops and seminars

• Authoring a book chapter

The National CPD standards for Nursing require:

• Nurses to undertake a minimum of 20 hours of CPD annually

• One hour of active learning will equal one hour of CPD. It is the nurse responsibility to calculate how many hours of active learning had been undertaken.

• The CPD must be relevant to the nurse’s context of practice

• Must maintain a written documentation of CPD that demonstrates evidence of 20 hours of completion of CPD activities

• Participating in mandatory skills acquisition can be counted towards CPD hours.
