Overview

Parents and teachers hope that integration with peers will be enjoyable and successful. Some children will welcome the opportunity to play or socialize with the child or adolescent with ASD - Level 1 (Asperger’s syndrome) and ASD - Level 2. However, some children will consider the child an easy target for bullying and teasing. Children with ASD are more prone to bullying and teasing in comparison to typical children. The presentation explains why children with ASD are more likely to be a target and strategies to reduce incidents of bullying and teasing.


Course Objectives

  • To consider the advantages and disadvantages of integration from an autistic perspective.
  • What is bullying and teasing? To identify different perspectives.
  • Explore why autistic children and adolescents are more prone and vulnerable to bullying and teasing.
  • Identify the acts of bulling and teasing experienced by autistic students in comparison to typical students.
  • Where and when is bullying and teasing likely to occur and the autistic student’s likely response.
  • The effects of bullying and teasing in the short and long term and association with school refusal, suspension, depression, and PTSD.
  • Strategies for schools, teachers, parents, peers, and psychologists to decrease the frequency and type of bullying and teasing experiences by autistic students.


Who Can Benefit?

Parents, family members, carers, health and educational professionals who see children and/or adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) Level 1 & 2 as part of their practice, including psychologists, teachers, teacher’s assistants, occupational therapists, speech pathologists, GPs, paediatric psychiatrists and paediatricians.

  3. Participants to the course are not allowed to split registration for different persons.
  4. For 1 full day seminar, only one set of meal entitlement per day shall be given to the registered participants. For half day seminar, only coffee and tea will be provided.
  5. Food served will be “no pork and no lard”.
  6. No refund of fees for participant cancellations including medical leave but substitutions are allowed with written request to organizer at least two working days before the course commences.
  7. Registration will be taken as confirmed upon receipt of payment or issuance of invoice. Any cancellation will not be allowed. However, substitutions are allowed with written request to organizer at least two working days before the course commences. Please note that registration will be on a first-come-first-served basis. Payment must be received by due date, before attendance of training.

Tony Attwood

A Clinical Psychologist

Tony is a clinical psychologist who has specialised in Autism Spectrum Disorders since he qualified as a clinical psychologist in England in 1975. He currently works in his own private practice, and is also adjunct professor at Griffith University, Queensland and senior consultant at the Minds and Hearts clinic in Brisbane. His book Asperger’s Syndrome – A Guide for Parents and Professionals has sold over 500,000 copies and has been translated into 27 languages. His subsequent book, The Complete Guide to Asperger’s Syndrome, published in October 2006 has sold over 300,000 copies and has been translated into 18 languages, and is one of the primary textbooks on Asperger’s syndrome, otherwise known as Autism Spectrum Disorder – Level 1. He has written several other books on emotion management, relationships and sexuality, and general advice for autistic children and adults.

Tony has been invited to be a keynote speaker at many Australasian and International Conferences. He presents workshops and runs training courses for parents, professionals and individuals with Asperger's syndrome all over the world and is a prolific author of scientific papers and books on the subject. He has worked with many thousands of individuals of all ages with many expressions of autism.
