Overview

Students with autism, ADHD or related learning needs are frequently identified because their behavior and/or social skills are significantly different from other students their age. Their behavior may prevent them from participating successfully in their learning and social opportunities. These difficulties span across school and family life. It’s important to understand that there is a change of thinking about ASD which recognizes their neurodiversity. That affects how behavior and social differences are addressed.


This program will dig deeper into identifying the range of autism learning and thinking differences, personal strengths, and individual passions to discover how they affect a student’s ability to participate successfully in life opportunities. Visual strategies frequently become effective tools to provide short-term learning or lifelong support for mastering behavior and social needs. We will explore how to use a range of visual supports that lead to effective long-term solutions by building on strengths and providing accommodations for areas of challenge.


Course Outline


Day 1: (Part 1)

  • How autistic characteristics relate to communication, behavior and visual strategies
  • Neurodiversity: Identifying each student’s personal “formula”
  • Identifying causes of behavior and social challenges


Day 1: (Part 2)

  • Quick Behavior Assessment
  • The communication partner makes a difference
  • Correcting misunderstandings about autism and communication


Day 2: (Part 1)

  • Sensory dysregulation, invisible memories, compounding effect and other characteristics
  • The magic of the Quiet Spot
  • Digging deeper into relationships between ASD characteristics and behavior and social challenges
  • More samples and examples of visual tools


Day 2: (Part 2)

  • The “magic question” to solve behavior and social needs
  • The Operating Manual and the Autism Tool Box
  • Linda’s favorite visual tool that is under-used
  • Visual tools for building a life-long support system


Course Objectives

Participants will learn to:

  • Clarify the student’s individual autism profile of strengths and challenges.
  • Identify causes for behaviors that prevent successful participation in student learning and family environments.
  • Teach autistic students to manage social issues that affect their ability to reach their life goals.
  • Use visual supports that have significantly improved student’s ability to independently participate successfully in their life opportunities .

  1. Please note that registration will be on a first-come-first-served basis and course fees must be paid prior to closing date to reserve a place.
  2. Payment of fees is not a guarantee for the event to be staged as planned. Should the event be cancelled for any reason, a full refund will be made to all registered participants and no other claims are allowed. The organizer disclaims responsibility should any change in the event occur for any reason.
  3. Participants to the course are not allowed to split registration for different persons.
  4. For 1 full day seminar, only one set of meal entitlement per day shall be given to the registered participants. For half day seminar, only coffee and tea will be provided.
  5. Food served will be “no pork and no lard”.
  6. No refund of fees for participant cancellations including medical leave but substitutions are allowed with written request to organizer at least two working days before the course commences.
  7. Registration will be taken as confirmed upon receipt of payment or issuance of invoice. Any cancellation will not be allowed. However, substitutions are allowed with written request to organizer at least two working days before the course commences. Please note that registration will be on a first-come-first-served basis. Payment must be received by due date, before attendance of training.
