Course Outline Day 1
The morning session will consist of a seminar on occlusion. The afternoon session will be a hands on practical. This will cover face bows and jaw registration.
Course Aims
- Discuss the events precipitating the study of occlusion
- Appreciate the limitations of a balanced occlusion
- Understand the distinctions between Gnathology and Pankey Mann Schuyler theories
- Introduce the concepts of RCP, ICP and RAP
- Define how the dentition distributes lateral and vertical loading
- Describe the concepts of anterior and posterior guidance
- Understand the classification of levers and how this applies to occlusion
- Consolidate the theory and implications of bruxism
- Classify the options for lateral and protrusive guidance
- Consider the consequences of non-working side interferences
- Establish the three components of posterior stability
Course Objectives
By the time the delegate has completed this course he/she will:
- Manipulate the mandible to arc around its terminal hinge axis
- Confirm the tooth contact to register retruded contact position
- Evaluate the vertical and horizontal components of the RCP –ICP slide
- Demonstrate the examination for a mutually protected occlusion
- Identify the consequences of class II leverage in the occlusal scheme
- Record the guidance for a given occlusal scheme
- Critique the guidance and prescribe any adjustment
- Illustrate the protocol to identify non-working side interferences
- Conceptualize the impact of removing non-working side interferences
- Appreciate the treatment modalities for: working, balanced and non-working side guidance

The morning session will consist of an occlusal examination seminar and the afternoon session will consist of an occlusal examination practical.
Course Aims
- Define the mechanisms of occlusal adaptation
- Recognize that social and medical history may influence occlusal harmony
- Appreciate how the anatomy of the glenoid fossa influence mandibular movement
- Assign a classification and values to condylar movements
- Discriminate the opportunities to prescribe a Dahl appliance
- Understand how anterior tooth shape and position influence condylar movement
- Appreciate why vertical and horizontal elements of the slide influence treatment planning
Course Objectives
By the time the delegate has completed this course he/she will:
- Establish the protocol for occlusal examination
- Deliberate the consequences of an unstable ICP
- Evaluate the Bennett angle and Bennett movement
- Confirm the orbiting and rotating condyles during mandibular movements
- Conceptualize condyle position for working and non-working side excursions
- Describe the impact of bruxism with class II leverage
- Evaluate all information to prescribe a reorganized or conformative treatment plan

Prof. Paul A. Tipton, UK is an internationally acclaimed Specialist in Prosthodontics who has worked in private practice for more than 30 years. He is the President of the British Academy of Restorative Dentistry (BARD) and is the founder of Tipton Training Ltd, one of the UK’s leading private dental training academies and the author of over 100 scientific articles for the dental press. He has been named at #12 in ‘The Dentistry Top 50’ for 2017 in the UK and voted in the Top 20 ‘most influential dentists in the UK’ by his peers in Dentistry Magazine in April 2012, the leading Prosthodontist in the poll. Prof. Paul was also voted in the top 5 dentists in Private Dentistry’s Elite 20 poll, January 2012.
He gained his Master’s Degree in 1989 from the Eastman Dental Hospital and London University and started teaching at the University of Manchester’s MSc in Restorative Dentistry. He is now a Professor of Restorative and Cosmetic Dentistry at the City of London Dental School. His private dental training academy, Tipton Training, was founded in 1991 and to date over 3000 dentists have completed a one year course at the Academy.
In 1992, Prof. Tipton was awarded an honorary Diploma in General Dental Practice from the Royal College of Surgeons of England and was appointed a member of the British Dental Association’s Independent Practice Committee. In 1999, he was certified as a Specialist in Prosthodontics by the General Dental Council.
Prof Tipton is on the editorial board of Private Dentistry Magazine, The Journal of Indian Prosthodontics Society and Implant Dentistry and is a medical writer and part of the advisory board at Expert Beauty Magazine and ‘Woman's magazine. He was a founding member and on the Board of Directors of the British Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry and the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. He is the past president of the British Academy of Implant Dentistry and is currently the President of the British Academy of Restorative Dentistry. He was recently elected Fellow of the International Academy of Dental Facial Esthetics (IADFE) and Associate Fellow of the University of Warwick.
