Mastership Programme Lasers in Dentistry | Group 7

Overview

The courses will comprise of skill training sessions, exercises, practical applications, and hands-on training in every module to guide participants towards using lasers successfully and professionally in their own treatments. Over the course of one year, participants are taught fundamental physical and technical knowledge, and how to recognise primary, secondary, and tertiary indications on 12 attendance days split into 3 modules (4 days each). This programme concludes in Module 3 which takes place in Aachen, Germany with an examination and an official certificate of RWTH Aachen University and RWTH Aachen International Academy, the postgraduate education wing of the University. After attending all 3 modules, you will attain est. 84 CME.

Module Erbium Lasers

  • Erbium lasers (clinics) 
  • Laser technique (Erbium lasers)
  • Er:YAG and Er,Cr:YSGG
  • Scientific background and clinical indications
  • Skill training every day of every clinical indication
  • Hands on: Preparation in enamel and dentine, generation of a retentive surface, canal decontamination, apicectomy, soft-tissue cut with short pulses, soft-tissue cut with long pulses, open curettage, crown lengthening and bone preparation performed on sheep heads.

MODULE 3 | Aachen, Germany

Group 6: 16-19 December 2019 (4 days) | Group 7: 13-16 December 2020 (4 days)

Combined Wavelengths Therapy Concepts & Mastership Exams

  • Laser therapy concepts with the use of 2 different wavelengths 
  • Written multiple-choice exam
  • Oral exam (presentation of 5 patient treatments cases with diode or Erbium lasers)
  • Graduation Ceremony, after successful completion of an examination at RWTH Aachen University
  • 600 hours total workload
  • Over the complete course duration: case documentation & discussions

Prof. Gutknecht studied medicine and dentistry at the Universities of Bochum, Florence and Aachen.

Since 1990 he works as a scientific researcher at the RWTH Aachen University Hospital.

He did scientific research studies in the field of dental laser therapy at the UCSF University California San Francisco, USA, where he received his “ Master in application of Nd:YAG lasers in dentistry”

He completed his Doctoral Thesis (PhD) at RWTH Aachen University 1993 and was appointed as an Assoc. Professor at Aachen University Medical and Dental Faculty in 1998 after completing his Habilitation

In 2003 he was appointed as a Full Professor at the Department of Operative Dentistry, Periodontology and Pediatric Dentistry at RWTH Aachen University Hospital, Medical and Dental Faculty

Dimitris strakas

Dr. Dimitris Strakas

DDS, MSc, PhD

Dr Dimitris Strakas was born in 1975 in Volos Greece, where he has a private laser dental clinic since 2003. He completed his studies in Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and his Master of Science in Lasers in Dentistry, in RWTH Aachen University.

He is the President of the Greek Society for Laser Dentistry (GSLD) and Chairman of the World Federation of Laser Dentistry – European Division (WFLD-ED).

Since 2007 he is an adjunct faculty member of the Aachen Dental Laser Center (AALZ) at RWTH Aachen University and from 2009 on the Scientific Director of AALZ Greece. This is the Greek branch of Aachen Dental Laser Center, providing Certified Education to dentists, with Seminars, Workshops and Mastership Courses in the fields of Laser Dentistry and Laser Safety.

He has many publications and articles on laser dentistry in Greek and international magazines. He has translated in Greek three books for Laser Dentistry. He is a reviewer for Lasers in Medical Science (LIMS) journal and a member of the Editorial Board of Laser Magazine (the International magazine of Laser Dentistry by Oemus Publications).

He has given a variety of lectures in Greek and International Congresses, meetings and workshops.

Since 2012 he is a PhD candidate in Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, in the department of operative dentistry.

Ren  franzen

Priv.-Doz. Dr. rer. medic. René Franzen

Physicist

Dr René Franzen studied physics at Düsseldorf University and completed his thesis in the Department for Laser Medicine. Since 2001 he has worked for RWTH Aachen University and the AALZ Aachen Dental Laser Center and is involved in teaching and research in the field of laser-supported dentistry. In 2003 he completed his PhD thesis for which he was awarded the RWTH prize for outstanding interdisciplinary research. Dr. Franzen teaches optics, laser technology, dosimetry and laser safety and is also responsible for running the AALZ’s e-learning system.

  • Interdisciplinary research project on a miniaturised dental laser (including numerical approaches for optimisation of internal laser optics, genetic algorithms)
  • Responsible for a project for establishing and maintaining an e-learning system for the international post-doctoral master programme “Master in Lasers in Dentistry“ (M.Sc.)
  • Responsible for quality management in the master programme “Master in Lasers in Dentistry” (M.Sc.)
  • Involved with development for MSc curricula in dentistry, responsible for ECTS calculations and involved with accreditation of the master programme
