Music has been used since time beyond to help children learn. Music has the ability to stimulate attention and increase motivation to participate more fully in other aspects of the educational setting and address development in cognitive, behavioral, physical, emotional, and social skills.


How can we make use of this powerful medium in music to help our students learn in the special education classroom?


Course Outline

This training will introduce music strategies that can be used in the classroom to optimize learning and skill acquisition.


Areas covered include:

  1. Music and the Brain
  2. Musical Development in Children
  3. Purposes of using Music in the Special Education Classroom
  4. Practical Tips & music strategies that can be used to address different domain areas.


Course Objectives

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify musical behaviors in their students
  2. Understand the different purposes of using music-based strategies in the classroom for learning
  3. Facilitate simple musical activities in a group setting
  4. Use songs for engagement
  5. How to use various small handheld percussion instruments therapeutically


Who Can Benefit?

This course is suitable for anyone working with children with special education needs, especially those under the age of 12. It will be of interest to teachers / educators, teaching assistants / aides, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, and psychologists.


No prior music experience is required.


What to Prepare for the Course?

This course comprises both theory knowledge and practical hand-on components.

Participants are expected to prepare their own musical instruments (existing small handheld percussion instruments or improvised (eg, pots/pans – drums, chopsticks/pens- claves, homemade shakers etc) to maximise their learning experience.

  1. Please note that registration will be on a first-come-first-served basis and course fees must be paid prior to closing date to reserve a place.
  2. Payment of fees is not a guarantee for the event to be staged as planned. Should the event be cancelled for any reason, a full refund will be made to all registered participants and no other claims are allowed. The organizer disclaims responsibility should any change in the event occur for any reason.
  3. Participants to the course are not allowed to split registration for different persons.
  4. For 1 full day seminar, only one set of meal entitlement per day shall be given to the registered participants. For half day seminar, only coffee and tea will be provided.
  5. Food served will be “no pork and no lard”.
  6. No refund of fees for participant cancellations including medical leave but substitutions are allowed with written request to organizer at least two working days before the course commences.
  7. Registration will be taken as confirmed upon receipt of payment or issuance of invoice. Any cancellation will not be allowed. However, substitutions are allowed with written request to organizer at least two working days before the course commences. Please note that registration will be on a first-come-first-served basis. Payment must be received by due date, before attendance of training.

Eta Lauw

Eta LAUW is a Registered Music Therapist with a Masters in Music Therapy from the University of Melbourne. She has worked with students with autism and other complex disabilities from the age of 5 -18 in special education schools in both Singapore and Australia. Apart from direct intervention, Eta is also experienced in conducting joint interventions with other professionals such as occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, psychologists and teachers and providing consultation on the use of music strategies to help students achieve goals in their Individualised Education Plan. Eta is a professional member of the Association for Music Therapy (Singapore) and Australian Music Therapy Association.
