Overview

Lower Limb (Podiatry) Dry Needling Course (2 Days)

An introductory course for evaluation and treatment of neuromyofascial pain and dysfunction present in both the acute and chronic orthopedic population.

Instruction will include evaluation and application of dry needling of neuromyofascial trigger points for musculature which is considered appropriate at the introductory level of training.

Online learning commences as soon as you register. After successful completion of online modules, this two-day course consists of a combination of lecture and theory, regional anatomy review, needle demonstration followed by a large amount of hands-on supervised practical sessions.

There is also a (non-intimidating) practical test to ensure adequate transfer of knowledge to all course participants.

Trigger point dry needling (TDN) will be presented as a tool to evaluate and treat the neuromuscular system. The Travell & Simons’ techniques will be discussed and demonstrated. Supporting research will be presented and discussed.

Courses are fully catered for with a comprehensive colour manual, video access to techniques and ongoing clinical support available. Treatment safety will be evaluated throughout the course.

Course Outcomes

  • Define trigger points, motor banding, and neurological presentations of neuromuscular dysfunction
  • Review literature supporting efficacy and treatment rationale of TDN
  • Instruct application of TDN for orthopedic and neuromuscular conditions
  • Review anatomy of regions to be taught in Podiatry 1 course
  • Discuss safety
  • Discuss indications and contraindications for treatment

  • Lower Extremity, including extensor hallucis longus and tibialis posterior
  • Gastroc/Soleus/Tib Ant and more
  • Thigh-anterior, medial and posterior


Online Learning Modules

GEMt dry needling courses begin with online modules for safety, theory, and anatomy. Access to the online learning platform is provided via email once you have completed course registration. Completion of the online modules is a requirements before attending the course, and you should allow sufficient time to complete them before the course starts.

  • Needling Demonstration Video (27 mins)
  • Needle Theory Video (1 hour, 15 mins)
  • Neuro-myofascial Pain Video (19 mins)
  • Theory test (45 mins)

Total = 5-6 hours


Course Eligibility

A degree qualification in either:

  • Podiatry, Physiotherapy, Osteopathy, Chiropractic, Physical Therapy or a Medical Doctor who work with patients suffering from acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions.
  • You must be a registered clinician with Professional Indemnity Insurance to enter this course
  • Course participants are required to act as subjects as required for the duration of the course.
  • This course is not advisable for anyone who is pregnant (unless they are prepared to bring a friend willing to be needled on their behalf)

Refunds, Transfers & Credits

If a course is cancelled for any reason by GEMt then as much notice as possible will be given to course participants. In this instance, course fees only will be returned in full as soon as possible. For International courses, GEMt accepts and refunds course fees in AUD. We are not accountable for fluctuations in exchange rates. NB. GEMt is not liable nor responsible for any other out of pocket expenses incurred by registrants due to course cancellations or venue changes; this may include flights, accommodation or bank fees on financial transfers.

  • Malaysia
  • Singapore


Transfers within the same region:

If you wish to transfer to another GEMt course within the same region, the following fees will be incurred:

  • Outside of 30 days of course commencement = FREE transfer to the requested course
  • Under 30 days of course commencement = 25% administration charge


Transfers between regions incur the following charges:

  • Outside of 30 days of course commencement = 25% administration charge
  • Under 30 days of course commencement = 50% administration charge


Cancellation:

  • Outside 30 days of course commencement = 25% administration charge
  • Under 30 days of course commencement = 75% administration charge
  • Under 14 days of course commencement = 100% administration charge, i.e. no refund


Inability to Participate in needling.

  • If for any reason a course participant is unable to take needles for the duration of the course e.g. Pregnancy / Religion / Needle Phobic/ Metal allergies… arrangements must be made to bring a friend along to take needles in their place.
  • There will be costs involved to cover all catering and prior contact must be made to course co-ordinator at time of registration to arrange such payment.


Those Clinicians that have done other courses

  • If you have already completed another dry needling course, you are entitled to a 50% discount on the full course fee on Australian held courses. (Not available for Essentials, Upper Limb, Lower Limb or guest courses)

Luke Madden

Demonstrator, Australia

Luke completed his first dry needling course in 2009 with GEMt and his Advanced Needling training in 2010. Since then Luke encourages all his staff to complete the GEMt Dry Needling Program. Luke started teaching needling with GEMt in 2013. Throughout Luke’s three clinics, he and his team, needle extensively to almost every patient achieving amazing clinical outcomes through the GEMt Dry Needling technique.

Angela Frazer

Ange completed our GEMt program in 2010. She was a standout on our courses so we approached her to join our teaching team and she has worked with us ever since. When asked about her DN skills Ange states “ Having the capacity to needle has been pivotal in my skill set and transformed my clinical outcomes”. Ange is a Mum of 4 and still works as a rural Physiotherapist based in Central West NSW (Orange). In 2018 Ange co-founded and launched PHYZ X 2U; a mobile allied health business which provides health education and service delivery to under serviced rural communities where GEMt Dry needling is an integral part of her routine practice.

Robert De Nardis

Director & Principal Presenter

​Robert De Nardis is an experienced practicing Melbourne Physiotherapist who received certification for dry needling from The Institute for the Study and Treatment of Pain (iSTOP) in Vancouver, British Columbia and has extensively utilised IMS/trigger point dry needling in his clinical practice in Melbourne, Australia.

Robert has an extensive background in two defined areas.

Firstly, as the Director of Sandringham Sports Physio, he has been involved with sporting athletes and teams at all levels, inclusive of the Sandringham Football Club (VFL) and the Melbourne United Basketball Club (NBL).

Secondly, as the Director of the Melbourne Whiplash Centre, Robert has been actively engaged in Whiplash evaluation, treatment and research since 1998. Robert’s paper with Dr Jenny Keating published in the Journal of Whiplash and Related Disorders Vol 4 (1) 2005 reveals some of the world’s best outcome results published for chronic neck pain.

Robert is a recognised expert in the field of cervical spine rehabilitation, having served as a panel member of the International Whiplash Task Force. Robert has also consulted for the UK Airforce, Fast Jet Fighter Pilot Program.

Brandon Kam

Advanced Presenter

​Brandon has been employed at Sandringham Sports Physio (SSP) since 2004. He has established himself as a Senior Physiotherapist and is the current Operations Manager at this facility.

Brandon has been extensively utilising Dry Needling during this time and has successfully completed the accredited GEMt Introductory and Advanced courses.

Brandon has worked with the successful Sandringham Football Club since 2005 and is involved in mentoring staff at SSP.

​Brandon has travelled as an instructor for GEMt since 2008.

Nanthini Palan

Nanthini Palan is a physiotherapist and STOTT P­ILATES Certified Rehabilitation Instructo­r who is passionate about enabling indivi­duals to move safely and efficiently­ in their everyday lives. She recognises t­hat physical injuries are a common, if no­t inevitable occurrence and feels fortuna­te that she can play a key role in helpin­g people regain functional independence t­hrough an integrated approach of rehabili­tation Pilates and dry needling. Nanthini believes that ev­ery medical profession can benefit from i­ntegrating Pilates and dry needling in their practice, for­ the ultimate betterment of their client.­ She is a qualified Rehabilitati­on Instructor Trainer and has completed her GEMt Introductory and advanced courses. Ivana Jajcevic

Demonstrator, Australia

Ivana has extensive experience working within a private practice setting. Currently working at Menai District Physiotherapy – she enjoys treating a variety of musculoskeletal, sporting and running injuries; with a passion for pre/post natal and women’s health Physiotherapy.

Ivana has been a GEMt dry needler since her early career and uses needling extensively with great effect as part of her treatments. Ivana enjoys teaching and assisting at GEMt courses with new and advancing needlers.

Ady Kim

Presenter, Malaysia

Ady Kim is GEMt’s regional Instructor and director of Biorehab Physiotherapy Centre in Malaysia. He has more than ten years of experience in the industry and has worked with world-leading athletes as well as various local sports teams.

Apart from teaching regularly in Malaysia, in 2018 Ady successfully conducted the first Dry Needling course in Cambodia for a group of Physiotherapists and Osteopaths from the Netherlands and France who were working in the country.

In 2011, Ady introduced Dry Needling into Malaysia, which at the time was not a widespread practice in the country. While it started to become more popular, after a few years of practising, Ady felt that his Dry Needling skills had plateaued and that there was a piece missing in the puzzle.

Ady contacted Robert De Nardis from GEMt Australia in 2014 and completed the accredited GEMt Introductory and Advanced courses, which advanced his needling skills, and took his understanding of the human body to a new level.

The introduction of Dry Needling and the skills acquired through GEMt has been successful in Ady’s practice and has brought it to new heights.

Under their collaboration, Ady & Robert have successfully trained hundreds of health professionals in Malaysia, and the demand is still growing strong.

Balaji Prem Chand

Instructor, Singapore

Mr Balaji has served as Secretary and Treasurer of Sports Medicine Association Singapore (SMAS) as well as Head Physiotherapist for the National Rugby Academy for the Singapore Rugby Union (SRU). He graduated from Trinity College Dublin with Honours in BSc Physiotherapy. His years of experience have allowed him to attend to various clients, ranging from patients with chronic disease, the geriatrics, neurological impairments, all while specialising in musculoskeletal and sports injuries.

Whichever the health need, his strong belief in holistic biomechanical correction and incorporation of evidence-based strength and conditioning effectively returns his clients to improved levels of physical activity. Being functionally conversant in many languages, including Chinese dialect has allowed him to build a good rapport with all his clients; his work in providing A-class care has been acknowledged with numerous Service Quality awards.

Outside of work, Balaji keeps active by playing in the National Hockey League for his Alumni Club.

Gareth Chew

Instructor, Singapore

Gareth graduated from Trinity College of Dublin (Honors) programme and started his career in NTFGH. Working at an acute hospital, he has a vast working experience, from Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy to the Intensive Care Unit. He believes in hands-on treatments such as movement with mobilisation, myofascial release, spinal mobilisation as well as GEMt Dry needling techniques. It is equally important to him that his clients understand their condition better and have control over their recovery.

As an athlete who used to represent his school in badminton and sprints, his childhood dream is to provide physiotherapy to young athletes, helping to preserve and optimise their physical and mental well-being throughout their sporting career.

Shavind Singh

Presenter, Malaysia

Shavind Singh has been a physiotherapist for 9 years. He graduated with Bachelor of Physiotherapy from the University of Teeside UK and a Diploma in Physiotherapy from Malaysia.

He has worked with a team of Orthopaedic & trauma unit as well as the Sports Medicine team in the government Hospitals in Malaysia. He currently runs his own private practise in Kuala Lumpur.

Shavind Singh is a member of the MPA (Malaysian Physiotherapy Association) He has completed all levels specializing in Dry needling from GEMt Australia and now teaches the levels in Malaysia.

He further did a short clinical attachment and went through an intense instructor training at Sandringham Sports Physio at Melbourne in 2015 under Robert De Nardis.

Ryan Kennedy

Demonstrator, Australia

Ryan Kennedy is a Physiotherapist with a strong interest in treating musculoskeletal injuries of all kinds. He finished his B. Physio at Newcastle University in 2007. He returned to Canada where he was exposed to Dry Needling.

On his return to Australia he took his Introductory Dry Needling Course in 2012 which changed the way he was able to assess and treat his patients. He took both the advanced needling levels in 2013 and has been using the techniques ever since.

Ryan is one of the Directors at Hunter Performance Physiotherapy in Maitland NSW where all of the clinians have been trained in the GEMt needling method.

Darrlyn Crystal

Crystal is a senior physiotherapist based at Biorehab Malaysia where she oversees the clinic and staff. Crystal specialises in musculoskeletal and sport injury cases; and being an athlete herself, she understands the impact of injuries on performance and believes in striving for progress, not perfection.

Associate Chiropractor – TAGS Spine and Joint Specialists (Subang Jaya, Malaysia)

Shaheena graduated from International Medical University (IMU) with Bachelor of Science (Hons) Chiropractic and has been practising for three years. She has always had an interest in holistic and non-surgical treatments. Vicknesh completed the GEMt Dry Needling program in 2018 and has been involved in teaching on GEMt courses in Malaysia ever since. Vicknesh has a special interest in musculoskeletal conditions and uses Dry Needling on a daily basis to impact the lives of his clients.
