Overview

Congress Program

As we Bring the Future into Focus for our 2020 Orthodontic Congress, the Program Committee have worked on an outstanding Congress Program showcasing international and national speakers.


The Congress will commence with a combined program for Doctors and Auxiliaries on Friday 20 March and will continue throughout the weekend, with the Auxiliary official program concluding Sunday 22 March and the Doctors program concluding on Monday 23 March.


Pre-Congress Workshops will take place from Thursday 19 to Friday 20 March 2020. They will be held at the Cairns Convention Centre. 

These workshops are not included in the registration category and tickets can be purchased via the online form.

Dr Alex Yusupov

Dr Alex Yusupov completed his BDSc in 1989, and MDSc in Orthodontics in 1992, both at University of Melbourne. He is an Honorary Fellow and clinical demonstrator at the University of Melbourne and has been in private practice since 1993. He is a Suresmile Faculty Doctor and part of the Suresmile Clinical Advisory Board. His interests include clinical photography, 3D technology, adult and complex multi-disciplinary treatments and lingual orthodontics.

Dr Ashley Smith

Dr. Ashley Smith completed his Dental degree and graduated from the University of Queensland (UQ) in 1980. He then completed his masters in Orthodontics (UQ) in 1986. He has been in private orthodontic practice for over 30 years and is actively involved in improving and teaching the best practice for the Insignia appliance. Dr. Smith has extensive experience in treating and teaching the management of complex cases, with and without surgery.

Dr Geoff Dance

Dr Geoff Dance is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon working in Townsville and Mackay. He is currently working in private practice after being a consultant OMF surgeon at The Townsville Hospital for many years where he was involved in undergraduate and post graduate teaching.

He graduated from Melbourne University in dentistry, working in rural and remote communities for 6 years as a general dentist before undergoing his post graduate surgical training in Adelaide. This involved obtaining his medical degree and a Clinical Doctorate in OMFS at the University of Adelaide. He obtained his surgical fellowship ( FRACDS(OMS) ) in 1999. Although he practises the full scope of the specialty he has a particular interest in orthognathic surgery.

Professor Benedict Wilmes

Professor Wilmes did a postgraduate training in oral surgery at the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery at University of Muenster, Germany. He received a M.S. and a post graduate degree in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics at the University of the Duesseldorf, Germany.

In 2004 he became Assistant Professor, in 2006 Associate Professor at the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Duesseldorf. Since 2013 he is Professor at the same University.

Professor Wilmes is reviewer and consultant of the Angle Orthodontist, the World Journal of Orthodontics, the Journal of Dental Research and the German Board (DIN) for orthodontic products. He has held more than 100 national and international lectures and courses on skeletal anchorage in orthodontics.

Professor Wilmes is a Visiting Associate Professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, USA. Professor Wilmes was awarded the First Prize of the German Orthodontic Society in 2007 and the First Prize of the European Orthodontic Society in 2009.

Dr Carlos Flores Mir

Dr. Flores-Mir graduated as a DDS from the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia – Peru in 1994. He followed his professional training completing an MSc and a PhD with a specialty training in orthodontics sandwiched in between at the same university. In 2002 he accepted a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Alberta in Canada. He is now a full Professor and leader of the orthodontic division at the School of Dentistry in the University of Alberta. Since 2007 he works as an associate in an orthodontic practice in the city of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Dr. Flores-Mir is a clinical researcher with interests in management of Class II malocclusions with fixed class II correctors, management of paediatric sleep disorder breathing from the orthodontist’s point of view, evidence-based decisions in a clinical world. He has lectured extensively about these topics in North America, Australia, Europe and South America. He has published more than 230 peer-reviewed publications and several book chapters.

Dr Mitsuhiro Tsukiboshi

Dr. Tsukiboshi is a graduate of Osaka University School of Dentistry in 1976. He earned a PhD in dental materials from Kyoto University in 1980 and has been engaged in private practice since 1981. Dr. Tsukiboshi’s interest in dental traumatology and autotransplantation has led to extensive clinical involvement, course presentations and publications. Dr. Tsukiboshi has lectured extensively on dental trauma and autotransplantation; he has authored many articles and two textbooks, one on dental trauma in 1998 and one on autotransplantation in 2000. The books have been published in several languages, including English. Dr. Tsukiboshi is a visiting lecturer at Osaka University and Loma Linda University since 1998 and is the President of the International Association of Dental Traumatology in 2009 and 2010. Dr. Tsukiboshi is certified as an adjunctive assistant professor of Western university in USA in 2012 and a clinical professor of the dental school of Tohoku University in 2015-2018

Siva Vasudavan, is a graduate of the University of Western Australia, the University of Sydney and Harvard University. He was the Registrar at the Dental Department in Princess Margaret Hospital for Children for two years, prior to completing his specialist orthodontic training at the University of Sydney under Professor M. Ali Darendeliler. Siva was selected as the inaugural Fellow in the Harvard University Craniofacial and Cleft Lip/Palate Orthodontics program at Boston Children’s Hospital, Massachusetts, USA. He completed this clinical Fellowship program over two years and concurrently completed a Master of Public Health degree from the Harvard University School of Public Health. Siva has contributed to more than 25 publications in the peer reviewed literature.

Dr Tony Weir

Graduating from the University of Queensland 1983 with a B.D.Sc. 1st Class Hons, Dr Weir completed his M.D.S. (Orthodontics) at University of Adelaide and has worked in private specialist practice since 1991. In addition Dr Weir has held the following positions: Clinical Supervisor in Orthodontics 1994-1999 and Honorary Senior Lecturer at UQ 2019 to present; Visiting Orthodontist James Cook University 2014, 2015; Clinical Consultant to Invisalign Australia, Invisalign South Asia since 2006, and member of the Invisalign Global Scientific Advisory Board. He has been invited speaker to ASO, ASOFRE, FORENZAO, Singapore Association of Orthodontists, ADA and Asia Pacific Dental Congresses, Australian Begg Orthodontic Society, and numerous orthodontic societies. An Australian Orthodontic Journal reviewer since 2010, Dr Weir has also published on clear aligners and on lower incisor extractions with aligners. He is currently, or has been, supervisor for 8 postgraduate research projects focused on aligner treatment.

Dr Sarah Lawrence

Dr Sarah Lawrence originally grew up in New Zealand and graduated from the University of Otago Dental School. She completed her three-year specialist Orthodontic training at the University of Melbourne in 2003. Since then she has worked in partnership with her husband, Dr Igor Lavrin in private Orthodontic practice. She has also worked at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne as part of the Craniofacial unit.

Dr Lawrence is a Clinical tutor and Lecturer for Postgraduate Orthodontic students at the University of Melbourne. This role includes supervising a number of ongoing research projects.

Dr Lawrence has a keen interest in Invisalign treatment and her practice has achieved Black Diamond status. She is a Clinical Consultant and speaker for Invisalign in the Asia-Pacific region. She has lectured in Australia, New Zealand, China, Macau, Singapore, South Korea, India and the United States including at conferences, university lectures and teaching Invisalign MasterClasses and the one-year Invisalign Future Elite course.

Dr Peter Miles

Dr Peter Miles received his Masters degree from the University of Pittsburgh in the USA graduating first in his class. He was a visiting lecturer at Seton Hill University in the USA and a Senior Lecturer in orthodontics at the University of Queensland for over 10 years. He is a reviewer for several journals including the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, the European Journal of Orthodontics and is on the editorial board of the Angle Orthodontist. Peter has over 50 publications and is one of the authors of the book ‘Evidence Based Clinical Orthodontics’. In 2018, he was awarded the Raymond Begg Research Award. Peter has his practice in Caloundra where he lives with his wife Sharon and four children (when they can drag him away from kite surfing). He also enjoys incessant whistling and annoying his patients and staff with 80’s music trivia.

Mithran Goonewardene completed Dental School at The University of Western Australia in 1981 and attended the Forsyth Dental Center/Harvard School of Dental Medicine in Boston, USA from 1984-1987 where he completed his Certificate in Orthodontics and Master of Medical Science degree. He is Head of Orthodontics and Graduate Program Director at The University of Western Australia, is a full member of The Edward Angle Society of Orthodontists and is Certified by the Australian Orthodontic Board. He visits Sri Lanka regularly as a visiting Consultant in Orthodontics in the Dental Institute, Colombo and participates in part-time private practice in Perth.

Sanjivan Kandasamy is Clinical Associate Professor at the Dental School, University of Western Australia and is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Saint Louis University.

He completed his dental degree at UWA and his specialist orthodontic training at the University of Melbourne, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at Saint Louis University. He is certified with the Australian Orthodontic Board. He is also an Affiliate member of the Angle Society USA.

He has numerous publications in the peer reviewed literature as well as seven textbook chapters. He has also published the first ever textbook on TMD and Orthodontics in August 2015 by Springer. He lectures regularly both nationally and internationally.

In 2016, Sanjivan Kandasamy won the PR Begg award, the Australian Society of Orthodontists’ Foundation for Research and Education’s most prestigious award for an outstanding original research paper, or series of papers, with significance to orthodontics. This award was related to his research into temporomandibular dysfunction, orthodontics and occlusion.

He is currently a reviewer for the American Journal of Orthodontics and Orthopedics, The Angle Orthodontist, Journal of Oral Rehabilitation, Quintessence International and is the Associate Editor of the Australian Orthodontic Journal. He is on the Editorial Board of Seminars in Orthodontics.

Annalene Weston

A Cardiff graduate in 1999, Annalene completed her VT year and worked in general practice in the UK until emigrating in 2003. She has worked along the Eastern Seaboard practising in both the public and private sectors, and has added a Masters in Health Law from University of Sydney to her dental qualifications. Until recently Annalene was practising in Central Queensland and serving on the local HCC; however, she is now based in Brisbane and, in addition to her role with DPL, Annalene works part-time in a suburban dental practice.

Prof Mauro Farella

Mauro Farella is Professor and Chair of Orthodontics, Director of the Postgraduate Programme in Orthodontics (Doctorate in Clinical Dentistry) and Deputy Director of Dental Research at the University of Otago, New Zealand. He holds a DDS Degree (University of Naples), a Specialist Degree in Orthodontics (University of Naples), a PhD in Oral Sciences (University of Reggio Calabria), a Specialist Degree in Medical Statistics (University of Milan), and the “Venia Legendi” in Switzerland (University of Zürich). He has also been awarded Certified Membership of the European Board of Orthodontists (Helsinki, Finland).

His current research interests include craniofacial growth, jaw function, and biomechanics in orthodontics. In addition, Mauro Farella is a widely recognized expert in orofacial muscles, bruxism, and temporomandibular joint research. Mauro Farella has published numerous (>130) original articles in peer-reviewed international journals, He is an Associate Editor of the journal “Orthodontics and Craniofacial Research” and served on the Editorial Board of the “Journal of Dental Research” and the “Journal of Oral Rehabilitation”. He has lectured around the world and is an active member of many associations. He is the recipient of several national and international research prizes, such as the Alan Docking Award from the International Association for Dental Research, and the Sir John Walsh Award, to acknowledge the excellence achieved in dental research.

Michael Waycott

Michael has provided accounting and consulting services to the Dental and Medical Profession since 1998 and is a Director of the Bongiorno Group.

Michael holds a Bachelor of Business degree (Acct Major), is a member of the National Institute of Accountants (MNIA) and has attained the Diploma of Financial Services (FP) as well as holding his Cert IV FMB. 

Michael has over many years presented to the dental profession who are starting out in practice right through to preparing for retirement. He is also a regular speaker with the Royal Australian College of Surgeons, the Australian Society of Anaesthetists and the General Surgeons of Australia. Michael presents at various conference and workshops around Australia discussing topics pertaining to finance that are relevant to all dental and medical professionals.
