Over the years of running my own busy 4-chair Dental practice for 11 years in Queensland, and Consulting with other Dental Practices in the last 4 years, I have found that focusing on setting up sound processes in the following 4 key areas of Dental Practice Management – the 4Ps as I call it – is pivotal to the success of any Dental Practice.

These 4 pillars of managing your practice, applies at all stages of a business, whether you are a start-up or an existing dental practice and broadly they are grouped under:

  1. P1: People
  2. P2: Processes
  3. P3: Purchases
  4. P4: Production

Lack of proper training, coaching and guidance in these 4 key areas leads many a rookie dental practitioner to start-up without having considered the basic elements of business that need to be in place to avoid failure and heartache. Ad-hoc firefighting approach is adopted to deal with problems as they surface creating high levels of stress, chaos and above all high staff turnover which in turn reflects on the businesses’ production goals.

A summary of what I personally feel is important to focus on and continuously improve under the 4Ps to Dental Practice Management


Running a Dental Practice is not easy. I have been there, done that and learnt the hard way. I invested strongly in an in-house weekly staff training programme where each staff member was encouraged to identify problems early, troubleshoot and strive to continuously improve systems and processes in their area of responsibility. I believe these structured weekly staff meetings (about 50 hours/year) provided the platform for the huge success I had in my practice.

Nowadays, helping others with the experience and skills I gained from my hands-on learning of Dental Business Management over the 11 years of ownership is what my company Just Excel Dental Training and Consulting is all about. Training is provided both online as well as in-house and it starts with a free consultation to assess your needs and tailor a programme to address your specific concerns and bridge the gaps.
